A graduate of New College in Sarasota, Florida, Bonnie’s art studies focused on monumental sculpture and evolved into a passion to design and create mosaic art. While still in undergraduate school she received her first mosaic commission, a classical Madonna wall panel for a local Sarasota church.
Bonnie went on to a successful 15+ year career in the television industry. In 2000, with a deep passion to teach and inspire children, Bonnie began teaching mosaic art to homeschool children in her garage studio and launched her education based company Maverick Mosaics.
She has been invited to be an Artist in Residence at a host of grade schools through the northern Virginia area, and in 2006 developed her signature Mosaic Legacy Program which offers grade school kids opportunity to design and construct a public art project and permanently install the work on school property.
As an expert in the field Bonnie authored “300+ Mosaic Tips, Techniques, Templates and Trade Secrets” (Published by Trafalger Square, 2012), a technical guide offering instruction and tips on design, materials, tools and art projects. The book has been well received by artist colleagues ad enthusiasts, and due to demand the book went into a second printing in early 2013. A second book, “Bonnie Fitzgerald’s Guide to Mosaic Technique” was released in early 2015 and features artwork and expert advice from over 100 international mosaic artists.
Bonnie is a popular instructor of mosaic art and teaches throughout North America. She currently teaches on-going classes in mosaic for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. Along with her husband Ken she also leads art-filled international travel tours. Visit maverickmosaics.com for details.
